Maintaining Your Hot Tub

Weather you are a spa tech or a spa owner here are some basic rules to follow. There are several important parts to maintaining a spa and they are all equally important. We will briefly go through the basics for each.

The first and most obvious is the water. It is very important to test your water at least once a week. Set yourself up for one day that you can take about ten minutes to test and adjust your water chemistry.

TESTING

There are two different types of test strips. If you are using bromine, the test strips should test for bromine, chlorine, Ph, and alkalinity. Keep in mind that you should not be using chlorine in your spa, (chlorine dissipates at 80-85 degrees therefore it is no longer useful in a hot tub set at 90-104 degrees Fahrenheit.).

You may notice that you get a low level reading for chlorine. Do not worry, that is normal, especially if you are using city or county water.

The second type of test strips is designed for a natural purifier. They will test for Ph, alkalinity, and monopersulfates (MPS). Never use bromine or chlorine with this type of purifier. It is very important that you have the correct type of testing kits for the chemicals that you use.
